Blue Jellyfish
Catostylus mosaicus
Hippocampus Barbouri

Identification: The blue jelly comes in colors ranging from very light blue to dark purple and burgundy, and its bell pulses in a distinctive, staccatolike rhythm.

Behavior: Multiple oral arms and mouths transport food to the stomach of these animals. As with all true jellies, blue jellies alternate between a sexual medusa stage and an asexual polyp stage. The fertilized eggs and the resulting planula larvae are brooded by the adult medusae. This jelly, although poisonous, is suitable for eating by humans when dried and processed.

Maximum Length: Bell diameter between 12 inches (30 cm) and 18 inches (45 cm)

Origin: Bays and estuaries along the east and north coasts of Australia

Minimum tank size: 20 Gallon

Feeding and diet: Zooplankton

Cautions: Not to be housed in a tank with very strong current. All power head and filter intakes should be covered with sponge or pre-filter so as not to suck the jellyfish into it.
