Emperor Seahorse
Hippocampus Procerus
Identification: This species is easily confused with Hippocampus whitei, however it differs in the taller and spinier crown and increased number of fin rays. Their dazzling tropical colors also set them apart from other species. They range in color from white, brown, yellow, orange, red, black, or green.
Maximum Length:
Origin: They occur naturally off the warm waters of coastal Queensland to the Gulf of Carpenteria. There have been reports of this species in PNG and the Solomon Islands.
Minimum tank size: 20 Gal.
Behavior: Very slow and graceful. Can be trained to eat from a feeding stick or even by hand.
Feeding and diet: Live enriched brine shrimp and ghost shrimp. Frozen Mysis shrimp.
Reef Compatibility: Do not keep
with fast or aggressive fish or they will starve to death. A species
tank is ideal. House with many hitching posts such as Caulerpa and
brightly
colored sponges to grab onto. Pipefish make excellent tank mates.
Cautions: Great care is needed to keep them in good health. Should be fed twice a day.
