Sergeant Major Damsel
Abudefduf saxatilis
Sergeant Major

Identification: Its coloration is greenish-blue overall, with black vertical bars in the body area and yellow between those bars on the back.

Maximum Length: Attaining a length of 5.9"

Origin: Tropical Atlantic

Minimum tank size: 30 Gallon

Behavior: This species also makes an excellent choice for the aquarist who is cycling a tank, both because of its hardiness and due to its inexpensive nature. This species makes an excellent aquarium fish although it is very aggressive, particularly towards smaller less aggressive species. The Sergeant Major Damselfish will feed upon a variety of prepared foods.

Feeding and diet: Meaty foods, including Krill, Mysis Shrimp, and vitamin enriched brine.

Reef Compatibility:  This species makes an excellent marine reef aquarium fish because it will not disturb invertebrates.

Cautions: Do not mix Sergeant Majors or other damsels with "shy" and "slow" fish. The latter will, invariably, suffer damage, stress and be out competed for food. This may lead to such stress that they become parasite infested and/or go on a starvation diet. Examples include "Cowfish," some shy "Tangs" and some "Clowns."
