Neoglyphidodon oxyodon
Velvet Damsel

Identification: Its coloration is dark blue to black overall with a white vertical stripe in the center of its body. It has lighter blue markings which lay horizontally both above and below the eye area. In addition, the tail and overall finnage tends to be purple in appearance.

Maximum Length: Growing to a length of approximately 4-5 inches.

Origin: Commonly found in the Australian Archipelago. Indonesia, and the Philippines

Minimum tank size: 20 Gallon

Behavior: For its size, it is an extremely aggressive fish particularly towards other fish in its own genus. It will also pick on other smaller, less aggressive species.

Feeding and diet:  This species is a hardy aquarium fish, accepting a wide variety of prepared foods; live brine shrimp, plankton, mysis shrimp, green algae.

Reef Compatibility: This fish makes an excellent marine reef aquarium species because it will not bother invertebrates. The Blue Velvet Damsel also makes a good fish when cycling an aquarium both because of its hardiness and its inexpensive nature.

Cautions:  Not a good candidate to be placed with timid fish.
